I've always wondered at the level of intelligence of Pokémon, and how humans see then. Pokémon are seen to be building relatively complex structures in some of the films, and to be able to communicate with Humans on an intellectually equal level, but while some Trainers see them as partners and equals, others see them as little more than tools (Team Rocket aside)...

I'm not even sure how I see them...

Oh, haha, a good point and one of these when you suddenly realize you /probably/ think too hard about 2d pixel games about collecting monsters to fight more monsters...yeah, been there.

What bothers me the most about the supposed level of intelligence of pokemon is something loosely related, namely: what. do these people eat. Are they vegetarians? (actually still rather risky considering all the plant pokemon out there...) Even if for some reason they are, since Rockets were selling Slowpoketails in gen 2 and it was outrageous (but then it was rather the price illegal hunting that was the problem, haha) their pokemon probably aren't and a lot look like blatant carnivores. However tasty, you have to feed this Aerodactyl in some other way than sandwiches and I don't think you are allowed to just let her loose to hunt wherever you please, what if she eats someone's pet?

Ummm, what I mean is... in the games perhaps less so, but in the anime most pokemon used for work/battle/as pets seem, if not straight on par with humans, at least more intelligent and capable of individual thought than your average earth animal (not that I am here to deny animals intelligence and personality, but still). Some people fight with their Miltank/Tauros/other species that copy the animals we usually eat, so is this the same in pokemon world, that some are also bred for meat? Some species of pokemon could be selected according to intelligence, some to be bred for battle and some specifically for food... catching pokemon in the wild could be a bit of a roulette in contrast to just purchasing a young 'battle' pokemon with pedigree.

Now that I think of it, are there even any wild Miltanks out there? I somehow don't think so.
